Kratom, mitragyna speciosa, is made from the leaves of a tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. Kratom has a long history as being used as an herbal drug and today it is still used as a chew in countries like Thailand or Malaysia. What makes Kratom unique is its somewhat paradoxical effect. Taken at low doses it is stimulating while it is relaxing and sedating at higher doses. Kratom can be used as a recreational drug but is also thought to have medicinal potential for pain relief or to treat opiate addiction.
