Damiana: A traditional and herbal stimulant and aphodisiac

Damiana (Tunera diffusa), sometimes referred to as “the happy herb” or the “natural treasure of Mexico,” has been used for thousands of years by native peoples living throughout Mexico and Central America including the Mayans. This included using the herb as a medicine and as a substance to increase spiritual experiences during religious ceremonies. The plant grows in sunny, hot, arid climates including Texas and California. The flowering herb has bright yellow flowers, a pungent smell and a fig-like flavour.

Damiana belongs to the Turneraceae or passion flower family.
The herb has many uses. It can create a relaxing effect with a slightly euphoric buzz or overall sense of well-being. It is frequently used as a sleep aid, and has been known to create extremely pleasant if not highly vivid and sometimes erotic dreams.

The herb has frequently been used – and in several cultures - as a natural aphrodisiac. Damiana stimulates the genital area by enriching the body’s oxygen supply.

Pregnant and nursing women should not take Damiana, nor should people with liver problems.
